Ā Ā Ā Ā I relished paddlingĀ a canoe slowly near in manateeĀ habitat.Ā Ā We saw a manateeĀ feeding andĀ swimming slightly below the surface.Ā Ā It was large, peaceful, and mysterious.Ā Ā Ā Manatees graze on sea grassĀ in the shallows in Florida.Ā Threats to manatees:Ā Ā collisions with power boats;Ā red tides caused byĀ sewage and fertilizer runoff; and algae blooms thatĀ block the sun fromĀ reaching the sea grass (which manatees dependĀ on to eat).
"The Manatee is a mammal like us. It has a brain and a nervous system, much like ours, but the manatee will not fight, even to protect itself orĀ save its young.Ā It injures no other vertebrate creature.Ā Surely there is some use in contemplating this uniquely blameless life."- Faith McNulty
