I recently watched the movie "Lakota Nation versus the United States".Ā In the movie, the Native Americans say that people shouldĀ "Live in the Beauty of the Creation".Ā
They have a sayingĀ that roughly translates as "all my relations". "Ā In Lakota they say āMitĆ”kuye OyĆ”s'iÅā meaning āall my relationsā āwe are all related.ā This phrase is often said in prayer and ceremony and is an acknowledgement that everything is related from people to plants and animals. It has a deeper meaning as well, that everything in our universe is interconnected." " "All my relations," means all. When a speaker makes this statement it's meant asĀ recognition of the principles of harmony, unity and equality. It's a way of saying that you recognize your place in the universe and that you recognize the place of others and of other things in the realm of the real and the living.
"The Lakota Sioux want their land back- the landĀ where they and their ancestors have lived for millennia.Ā They consider the land- the lakes, rivers,Ā hills, cliffs, mountains, fields,Ā creatures, and plants there as sacredĀ and as their relatives.Ā Ā Ā The natives protest against the oil pipelines across their lakes and rivers.Ā Ā They refuse the money that the USĀ offerred them for taking their land.Ā They are part of the "Land Back" movement.
Good news- in fall 2023, Minnesota Judge Metzen dismissed charges against 3 Native American women who had protested againstĀ theĀ Enbridge Line 3 oil pipeline.Ā Judge MetzenĀ said "Ā justice meant throwing out charges against Anishinaabe people committed to preserving their treaty lands. āThe court finds that it is within the furtherance of justice to protect the defendants peacefully protesting to protect the land and water,ā she wrote. "
